The event, held by the Leicestershire and Rutland Beekeepers Association, was the first of its kind in a city centre in the UK. Fascinated shoppers watched as complete amateurs repeatedly stood in a sealed net tent and took apart a colony of bees to see how it worked. The Lord Mayor councillor John Allen also donned full protective clothing and moved in close with the bees. Lottery funding allowed the specialist tent and several adult and child-sized protective suits to be made last year. Since then, the L&RBKA have demonstrated at the Royal Agricultural Show and several county shows. Graham Law, city bee advisor from the association said, "All the wild honey bees in England, and soon the whole UK, will be dead due to infestation by a parasite called Varroa. Only beekeepers using medicines can now keep bees alive. We are keen to attract new beekeepers by raising the profile of the craft."
